Search for missing kayaker near Sitka suspended
The search for a man who went missing on a kayak trip outside Sitka has been suspended.
Kale Pastel, 36, left Sunday on an early morning trip for Birdsnest Bay. The U.S. Coast Guard said he did not return and was reported missing.
A witness spotted Pastel's kayak later Sunday morning overturned and adrift in Eastern Channel, the Coast Guard said. The witness towed the kayak to Cannon Island.
The Coast Guard and Sitka Mountain Rescue launched a search. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew at 1:15 p.m. launched from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka and spotted the kayak on Cannon Island, according to a report from the Associated Press.
An update from Alaska State Troopers said the search continued until around 3:30 p.m. Monday.
Anyone with information is asked to call troopers in Juneau at 907-465-4000.
