Sometimes Christmas comes early, but it's not often the holiday comes in full like this. On Friday, more than 50 children from three Anchorage shelters had quite a day.

The Fred Meyer on Northern Lights teamed up with the Anchorage fire and police departments for their now annual Shop with a Cop, Shop with a Firefighter event. It provided $150 to a needy child who then teamed up with a police officer or firefighter and went on a shopping spree at the store.

The program began more than two decades ago by retired Fire Chief Mark Hall.

The event was also named in honor of Lisa Whitmore. The Anchorage police officer passed away from cancer this year and was a driving force in the program's success. Her husband and two children were on hand for the event.
