Homer Electric Association has agreed to purchase a battery from Tesla, the utility wrote in a news release on Tuesday, Dec. 3. It’s called the Battery Energy Storage System, or BESS.

“The BESS will be capable of storing 93 MWh (Megawatt hours) of electrical power that can be delivered to the grid at a rate of 46.5 MWs per hour,” HEA wrote.

HEA says the BESS will make its system more efficient, lower greenhouse gas production and reduce power outages.

Another benefit of the BESS, according to the utility, is that it will open the door to other projects that might have otherwise stretched the company’s assets.

The project is expected to be installed at the corner of the Sterling Highway and Boundary Road in Soldotna and in service beginning in the fall of 2021.
