President's order forms task force on missing and murdered Indigenous peoples
President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a task force to address missing and murdered Native Americans and Alaska Natives, the White House announced Tuesday.
The order forms the Operation Lady Justice Task Force that will be led by Attorney General William Barr and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt. The group will focus on developing plans to confront the crisis of missing and murdered Native American and Alaska Native women and children.
A multi-jurisdictional team will be formed to review unsolved cases and the Trump administration says the Department of Justice will be issuing grants in conjunction with the task force.
According to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, homicide was one of the top three causes of death from 2012 to 2015 for Alaska Natives between the ages of 15 and 24. The Urban Indian Health Institute said in a 2018 report that there were more than 5,700 cases of missing and murdered indigenous women in 2016.
