Let it grow: APD raising funds to fight prostate cancer
Some Anchorage cops are sporting a little more facial hair than usual.
It's No Shave November, the Anchorage Police Department's sixth annual fundraising event with the American Cancer Society.
According to the nonprofit Movember, which raises money and awareness for cancer and men's health internationally through November campaigns, prostate cancer is the second-most common cancer among men but when detected early, survival rates are better than 98%.
Donations will go toward research, rides for patients going to chemotherapy, a 24/7 helpline and living areas near hospitals.
Organizer Detective Sgt. Gregory Witte says the department has raised more $16,000 so far. The goal by the end of the month is $20,000. He says it's a great way for APD to raise funds and awareness about prostate cancer.
People interested in donating to the campaign can do so through APD's official GoFundMe page.
