Alaska Airlines has partnered with Surfline, an organization that provides of global surf reports and forecasts, to offer discounted airfare based on the size of ocean swells around the Hawaiian islands.

Currently, travel to Honolulu, Kona, and Maui is 15% off, but if the swells get bigger throughout the week, the sale could go up to 30% off.

"Depending on the size of the swell, that discount will keep going up," said Tim Thompson, manager of external affairs for Alaska Airlines. "Right now, [Surfline has] already registered the swells for the beginning of the week, which is a 15% discount. And now, if we can get those swells above 21 feet, then we'd be looking at a 30% discount.

"But the best part, is that discount's not going to go down. So right now we've got a baseline of 15% off."

According to the Alaska Airlines website, here's how the discount breaks down.

If the maximum swell height is:

  • 0 to 10 feet = 10% off
  • 11 to 15 feet = 15% off
  • 16 to 20 feet = 20% off
  • 21 feet or more = 30% off

Discounts are based on Surfline’s maximum swell height forecast for Hawaii from Nov. 4–20, 2019.

Thompson said the airline knows Alaskans like to travel and book travel last minute, and the company is always looking for unique ways to engage with customers.

"We're going to be looking at other ways to use dynamic data, maybe it's surfing, maybe it's skiing. So we're going to be looking at different ways to give Alaskans those kind of last-minute travel opportunities," he said.

Those interested in this sale can only purchase tickets through this Friday, Nov. 8. Travel needs to be complete by Nov. 20, 2019.

Thompson suggested people who want to take advantage of the "Swell Deal" should act fast and keep an eye on AlaskaAir.com/Swell for the latest discount and swell size.
