Free toddler playtime comes to borough building in Palmer
Little kids in Palmer now have a free place to play and run off some of their energy after a parents’ group saw the need for more indoor activities for toddlers.
The United Way of Mat-Su teamed up with the Early Childhood Partnership to create an open gym at the Mat-Su Borough building. The Mat-Su Health Foundation provided the funding so they could rent out the space once a week for the next year.
Michele Harmeling with the United Way said the first open gym brought out about 60 children and their parents.
“I think we all anticipated it was going to get popular because there’s just not a gathering space like this in the Palmer core," Harmeling said. "In Wasilla there is the Menard and Turf Time for Tots and some other play groups. This is unique in so much as we’re centrally located and a lot of these folks can walk."
The toddler playtime is every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. It’s free and open to kids five and under. Supervision is required.
