1 dead after small boat capsizes in Southeast Alaska
The U.S. Coast Guard says one person died Friday after their small boat capsized near Salt Chuck in Southeast Alaska's Duncan Canal.
“At approximately 1:00 a.m., Sector Juneau watchstanders received a notification from the crew of a vessel that two individuals went into the water after their skiff capsized while in transit to them,” a news release from the Coast Guard reads.
The crew rescued one person who was later reported to be in good condition.
Multiple groups including Alaska State Troopers, search and rescue personnel from Petersburg and a Coast Guard helicopter crew from Sitka searched for the missing person from the water and the shoreline.
The helicopter crew discovered the deceased person.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and searchers," said Capt. Stephen White, commander of Coast Guard Sector Juneau. "This is a tragic incident that deeply impacts the entire community of Southeast Alaska."
