Troopers confirm overdue Cordova hunter found dead
Neil Durco has been found dead, Alaska State Troopers confirmed Sunday, Oct. 13.
"Neil Durco, age 33 of Cordova, was found deceased by Alaska Army National Guard medevac at the bottom of a steep chute," troopers wrote in an online dispatch.
AST says next of kin have been notified.
Alaska State Troopers say a ground and aerial search is underway for an overdue Cordova hunter.
Neil Durco, 33, went hunting alone on the McKinley Trail on Monday, according to an online dispatch from troopers. He had minimal food rations, was not prepared with gear for the weather and had not returned by Tuesday as expected.
“A Wildlife Trooper and U.S. Forest Service employee located Durco’s vehicle at the trailhead on [Wednesday], but were unable to locate Durco,” the dispatch reads.
Troopers are working with the Forest Service Crew that maintains the McKinley Trail along with Cordova police and fire officials to search for Durco from the ground.
A search from the air was initially delayed because of weather, but troopers were notified that the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center was launching aircraft about noon Thursday.
