University of Alaska Anchorage students have a new place to relax as the university opened its new esports lounge Monday on the second floor of the Student Union.

The area used to house a computer lab but now gives the UAA Esports Club a new home. The club had around 20 members last year; that number has nearly doubled since then.

The lounge also gives gamers of all levels a place where they can compete against each other.

"Students used to casually game back here with their own PC gaming, so we saw there was definitely a need on campus for this space," said UAA Director of Student Life and Leadership Kim Morton.

The lounge took about nine months to be completed.

"I think it's really awesome. It gives us a place to relax a bit, you know," said student Jonathan Andrade. "College life can be stressful sometimes. Having an area to come and play, it's nice."

The lounge is free for all UAA students and staff. The rest of the community can also use the space — but for a fee.
