Anchorage school zone speeding tickets on the rise, police say
Anchorage police say officers have written more school zone speeding tickets in the city during the first few months of this year compared to the same time last year.
Data from the Anchorage Police Department indicates that police officers wrote 40 speeding tickets within a school zone from January through May 2018. The department says officers wrote 21 more tickets during the same period for 2019 — totaling 61 tickets.
"Our increase in patrol officers has allowed us to improve our enforcement efforts and strategies, and this is another direct result of that. We'll always be out there enforcing and making sure our roads are safe for everyone," said APD Deputy Communications Director Kendra Doshier.
The information comes on the heels of a new ordinance within the municipality that bans cell phone use in school zones, unless a hands free option is used.
