Budget cuts force shutdown of winter ferry service for several communities
Many people will have to find others ways to to get from some parts of Alaska to others this winter.
Whittier is one of five communities that will lose ferry service starting Oct. 1.
The Alaska Marine Highway System had its budget reduced by $43 million, or 31% for the 2020 fiscal year, according to a release from the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
A spokesperson for the department says Chenega Bay, Cordova, Tatitlek and Valdez are the other communities that will lose winter ferry service.
All communities serviced by AMHS will have a reduction this winter.
The winter schedule runs through April 30, 2020.
