Fishing vessel recovered after last month's explosion in Whittier
A 99-foot commercial fishing vessel that sank after an explosion and dock fire in Whittier last month has been recovered.
Salvage crews raised the Alaganik Monday morning and brought it ashore at Smitty's Cove boat ramp. The vessel sank following the July 7 fire at Delong Dock.
Whittier police and the U.S. Coast Guard say the explosion started on a fixed barge, before it spread to the pier and then to the Alaganik. Both agencies are trying to find out what caused the blast.
The guard initially searched for two people who were said to be on board. One person was found safe, but the search for the other person person, a 49-year-old man from Cordova, was suspended.
