Back to school: Event has backpacks stuffed with supplies, free services for kids
Parents can gear up their kids with supplies or get some free healthcare before the kids head back to school.
Fairview Recreation Center with co-sponsor Anchorage Health Department is hosting its 3rd annual Back to School Health and Safety Fair this weekend.
On Saturday, Aug. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fairview recreation center they will have free immunizations, eye exams, haircuts, food, games, prizes, and 600 backpacks with pens, pencils and notebooks for kids. They even have something for the adults who can get free confidential health screenings.
Carlo Sipin with the Anchorage Health Department says this year they are growing even more with additional sponsors and other people helping out.
"Really what we want to do with this event is to engage the community," said Sipin. "This is about people taking care of people and Anchorage is one big family. The planned events and the sponsors have been tremendous overall it's the community coming together to take care of the people in need."
Some of the sponsors include Coca-Cola Bottling of Alaska, JCP Salon, Alaska National Insurance Co., Arm Rippin Toys, Shirt's Up, Fox 100.5 FM and Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center.
They are expecting 600 to 800 people to come out this year so if you want to get a free backpack and supplies they say to come earlier than later.
