Recent hot, dry weather is causing the Division of Forestry to implement burn suspensions in two areas of Southcentral Alaska, according to releases from the department Thursday.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, small- and large-scale burn permits are suspended in the Matanuska-Susitna valleys and the Kenai Peninsula in order to prevent wildfires. The suspension includes open debris burning and burn barrels.

Fires for cooking or warming are allowed as long as they’re less than three feet in diameter and someone nearby has plenty of water to control and put out the fire.
