Giving her clients a close shave is what Sherri Lilly loves about the barber business.

“That’s what attracted me, the straight razor,” she laughed.

She was a women’s hairdresser and stylist for nine years before she decided to follow her true passion and get her barber’s license.

“I like the tradition of it. The cleanliness, and the handsomeness and manliness about it,” Lilly said.

Instagram was her social media tool to get her work out there as the AK Lady Barber

She takes the time to make sure every cut and shave is just right, using her trusty straight razor for finishing touches, and hopes the men leave feeling a little bit more handsome than when they came in.

When it came time to open her own shop, she knew Palmer was the place.

The AK Lady Barber now has a store front on 1150 S. Colony Way.

“It’s really a dream come true. I don’t mean to get emotional about it, but it just really is something that’s come full circle,” Lilly said. “To go a year and a half from starting my barbering and to be here now and have my community supporting me is just huge.”

Many Alaska men, like Alex Smades, are all about their beards. He’s happy to have someone in the neighborhood to help him finesse his facial hair.

“I think it’s super important there’s someone who takes care this specific niche market. Guys with beards and barber shops,” Smades said. “There’s none in Palmer, well now there is, but there wasn’t any in Palmer. When I was looking I had to go all the way into Wasilla.”

The shop is still looking for another barber. Lilly hopes to have three on staff to help accommodate walk-in clients.
