APD: Officer on leave, accused of sexually abusing teenage girl
An Anchorage Police Department officer is in jail Friday night. After being questioned by detectives, 28-year-old Officer Andres Ornelas has been arrested on multiple sex abuse charges involving a teenage girl.
APD dispatch received reports of the abuse by an officer Wednesday morning, according to a late night release from the department.
"Detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit immediately began a comprehensive criminal investigation," the statement from police reads.
Police said they learned the teenage girl was sexually abused earlier this year. They said there are no other victims at this time and said the officer was not on duty when the crime took place.
Ornelas has been placed on administrative leave without pay until the investigation is completed. APD's statement said this is standard procedure for this type of crime. The 28-year-old has been with the department for more than two years. The officer is currently assigned to the patrol division.
The case has been transferred to the Office of Special Prosecution. Meanwhile, an internal investigation will take place separately.
“APD takes any complaint about officer conduct very seriously," said Chief Justin Doll. "We have zero tolerance for any criminal or inappropriate conduct by our officers, and we will absolutely maintain the extremely high professional standards our community has come to expect from our Department.”
