Police name victim in fatal traffic collision in front of Brother Francis Shelter
Anchorage police have identified 52-year-old Wanda Jackson as the victim in the fatal collision in front of the Brother Francis Shelter July 25.
The driver of a pickup truck has been arrested after a fatal traffic collision in front of the Brother Francis Shelter Thursday night.
Mikaele Palelei, 43, faces a single charge of failure to render aid, though more charges are possible pending toxicology results.
The investigation into the collision temporarily closed Third Avenue between Post Road and Ingra Street. According to a community alert from the Anchorage Police Department, the crash happened at 10:23 p.m.
Initial reports said the woman was declared dead at the scene after being hit by a Ford pickup truck. Police said the driver never stopped to check on her.
However, someone driving in the vehicle behind the truck called police after the collision and followed the truck until they both pulled over near Fifth Street and Juneau Avenue. Police said officers arrived moments later.
"The dynamics of the collision, including who had the right-of-way, are still being determined," the alert read.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
