Are you ready for some football?!

It may be hard to believe, but high school players are already back in the weight room and getting ready for the upcoming season. As the players train and prepare, so do the men and women who officiate their games.

On this Workforce Wednesday, Brian Hosken with the Anchorage Football Officials Association says referees are needed and the association is casting a wide net.

"We're looking for anyone that is excited about football," Hosken explained. "[A person] that wants to give back to the game, give back to the community, possibly looking for some exercise and additionally, make some cash."

A basic understanding of football and passion for community are all you need to apply, as Hosken says the association will work with you on specifics.

"We go through some training and we have some training this Thursday, tomorrow night, at West Anchorage High School. [...] We put our officials through live scrimmages prior to the games," said Hosken.

There are three training sessions coming up, all at the West Anchorage High football field.

  • Thursday, July 18 from 6-8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, July 30 from 6-8 p.m.
  • Thursday, Aug. 1 from 6-8 p.m.

Hosken says that while the exercise and extra cash can be nice, the true takeaway of the officiating job is giving back to student athletes. Also, the schedule is quite flexible.

"Generally you can work as much or as little as you would like," Hosken said. "We can keep you busy. Besides tackle football, we officiate flag football. We have games every night of the week."
