Whittier declares state of emergency after Delong Dock fire
The City of Whittier has declared a state of emergency following a dock fire on July 7.
Delong Dock, which was used to offload fish, caught on fire after a fishing vessel exploded.
The proclamation from the city manager says the aftermath of the fire is beyond the city's means and has caused "extreme peril to the wellbeing of persons and property within the City of Whittier."
According to the declaration, funds from the Whittier Small Boat Harbor reserves will need to be used to pay for the damage.
The fire launched a search by the U.S. Coast Guard for two people said to be on board. Whittier police found one person safe and the search for the other person, a 49-year-old Cordova man, was suspended.
The declaration of emergency expires in seven days but can be reissued by the Whittier City Council. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
