State park managers have issued an order limiting fires in Chugach State Park to charcoal grills, cooking stoves and gas grills, a news release from the Department of Natural Resources stated Wednesday. Campfires, even in state-provided and designated fire rings, aren’t allowed.

“Unusually dry weather conditions resulting in high fire indices have resulted in extremely high fire danger throughout the state, and fire managers are expecting high fire conditions to continue into the near future,” said Alaska State Parks director Ricky Gease.

People who do use approved grills or stoves are asked to be vigilant and cautious.

Gease said the department will lift the order when conditions allow, but campers should expect it to stay in effect until Sept. 30.
