A fallen soldier from Alaska is being honored in a new way two years after his death in Afghanistan.

The Army's 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment had a Facebook contest to name a tank they put outside their headquarters.

The group was expecting some humorous name suggestions similar to Britain's infamous Boaty McBoatface, but instead there was tremendous support for naming the tank Kirk in honor of Pfc. Hansen Kirkpatrick who was killed in action in Afghanistan on July 3, 2017.

Hansen was a Wasilla resident and a Service High School graduate.

A plaque placed near the tank reads, "'In honor of the Ready First Combat team soldier who sacrificed his life during Operation Freedom's Sentinel' 08 February - 05 October 2017."

Kirkpatrick's father says he wants people to know about the tank because he does not want his son to be forgotten.
