Volunteers with the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group and airmen from three Alaska Air National Guard rescue squadrons picked up two distressed hikers this week near Seward’s Mount Marathon.

The mission started after the Alaska State Troopers asked for assistance, according to a release from the Alaska Air National Guard on Wednesday.

AMRG reached the two hikers by ground but, because of the slope’s steep angle, determined the safest way to get out was to be hoisted out; a helicopter was sent from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

The hikers and AMRG members were all lifted out and safely taken to Seward Airport.
