Ongoing wildfire activity on the Kenai Peninsula has shut down some of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's access routes to all public entry effective immediately, an emergency closure order from the United States Department of the Interior said Wednesday.

The access routes affected include:

•     Mystery Creek Road
•     East Fork Moose River, north of Watson Lake
•     Enstar Pipeline right-of-way, from the refuge boundary east of Sterling to the Chickaloon River

"The goal of this closure is to minimize risk to people and provide for access by firefighters as needed," the closure order states. "The closure will remain in effect through July 11, 2019 unless rescinded earlier, or extended for cause."

Those exempted from the order include federal, state or local officers, members of organized rescue or fire fighting forces in the performance of official duties and people with written permits to be in the area.
