An Anchorage woman is among those recognized with a Gracie Award for local radio programming. Former KFAT 92.9 radio DJ Kim Kane took home the honor for her public affairs program Power on the Block, which airs on Power 105.1 FM in New York, but is recorded at a studio in Anchorage.

The Gracies are a prestigious honor in the industry, recognizing exemplary programming created by, for and about women in broadcast media. Through Power on the Block, Kim Kane connects weekly with activists, recording artists and athletes about making a difference in their community.

"To say I'm totally honored is a gross understatement," Kane said in an emailed statement. "That this award is for women, at this moment in history and in an industry where we’re desperate for more women’s voices…it’s everything.”

Kane got her start in Anchorage radio, but spent more than a decade in New York, working at MTV Networks and iHeartMedia. Last year, she returned to Anchorage with her family to the non-profit Women's Power League of Alaska.

“I’ve moved on from radio as a full-time profession, but Power on the Block was my way to keep my tools sharp,” Kane said. “It’s kind of funny that I’m across the country, and then this! But I’ll take it! Great radio and compelling content can be created from anywhere in the world.”

The 44th Annual Gracie Awards Luncheon takes place in New York on June 26.
