APD locates person of interest, suspect in Chester Creek homicide
Police in Anchorage have located a person of interest and a juvenile suspected of shooting two young people in the woods near the Chester Creek Trail Sunday evening.
The Anchorage Police Department sent a release asking for help to locate 45-year-old LaShawna Nettles around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. A little over an hour later, they sent another saying she had been found.
Dispatch got a report of shots fired in the trail area near Sullivan Arena around 6:25 p.m. Sunday. Not long after, they received another report from someone saying they were shot in the woods.
Police say both victims were shot multiple times. One 18-year-old man was dead when officers arrived; the other, who was a juvenile, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A preliminary investigation found that the shots were fired after an altercation between a group of juveniles that started in the area of the sports field near the Sullivan Arena. Police say the altercation ended in the woods near the trail, where the suspect allegedly shot both victims before fleeing on foot.
Police say the suspect is now in custody; both he and Nettles are being questioned by detectives.
