The Wasilla Police Department has identified the pilot killed in last week's plane crash at Wasilla Airport.

John Hutchison, 61, of Big Lake was the was the only person onboard the experimental aircraft that went down on Aviation Avenue about 3:30 last Thursday afternoon, according to a release from the department.

WPD officers in the area saw an aircraft that seemed to be having mechanical issues. They say Hutchison was trying to get back to the airport when the plane went down.

Clint Johnson, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, said the plane took off at a steep angle and then the left wing dropped before the plane crashed, nose first, onto the road.

The NTSB continues to try and find out what caused the crash.
