Woman, dog killed in 2-vehicle crash on Debarr Road
Police in Anchorage diverted traffic on Debarr Road near Edward Street following a fatal crash involving two vehicles that left a woman and a dog dead.
In a statement on Tuesday, June 4, police identified the woman killed as 55-year-old Candace Hathaway.
Anchorage Police Department officers responded just before 3 p.m. to the intersection of Debarr Road and Edward Street in Northeast Anchorage for an injury accident.
The preliminary investigation determined a Chevy Suburban and a Ford Mustang collided. Hathaway was pronounced dead at the scene; a dog inside the vehicle was also deceased, according to a statement from APD.
The woman driving the Mustang was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The man driving the Suburban was not injured.
Police say the cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Investigators will be on scene for the next several hours, police stated. Debarr Road is closed westbound between Edward Street and Beaver Place. Police ask commuters to use alternative routes.
Correction: APD sent an updated release to correct that it was a woman driving the Mustang, not a man as previously reported by police. This story has been amended.
