Richard Barrickman stood alongside the Sterling Highway Sunday afternoon and could only watch a fast-moving fire destroy his home in Clam Gulch. A photo shows the 66-year-old being comforted by local postmaster Jan Casey as flames leap in the background.

"I cried myself to sleep last night," said Barrickman on Monday afternoon.

He also said he is trudging along after losing everything in the fire and is currently staying with family in Soldotna. Barrickman said he does not have insurance.

The fire started around 1 p.m. Sunday. Barrickman wasn't home at the time but he says he was nearby. Central Emergency Services out of Soldotna, as well as Ninilchik and State Forestry firefighters responded, Fire Marshal Brooke Dobson said.

There was concern the fire would spread but crews were able to stop it around Barrickman's home. Dobson said there is no official no cause of the fire at this time.
