Anchorage police have released the name of the man who was found dead in East Anchorage last Friday.

The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Leopoldo Sanchez. Police said next of kin procedures have been completed.

"This case is now classified as a homicide investigation," police said in a statement last week. "The adult male victim died as a result of trauma to the body."

The Anchorage Police Department closed eastbound lanes on Debarr Road early Friday morning as the Crime Scene Team investigated what they then called a suspicious death. Police responded to the scene at 1:12 a.m. and lanes reopened before 6:30 a.m.

Original reports said there was an unconscious person lying face down near Debarr Road and Patterson Street. Sanchez's body was found on a pedestrian walkway, police said.

Police said the body showed obvious signs of trauma. One person was being held for questioning.

APD spokeswoman Kendra Doshier said the person initially detained was the original caller who reported the man's death to APD.

"We were just trying to figure out what they knew, what happened, what they saw, and it was really just for questioning," she said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the death, including surveillance video, to call police at 311 (option #1), or contact Crime Stoppers at 907-561-STOP or

Doshier said Friday's death is the 14th homicide of this year. On the same date in 2017, Anchorage's deadliest year on record, there had been 12.
