Alaska Attorney General Kevin Clarkson had emergency surgery in a Seattle hospital Friday night, a Department of Law spokeswoman said.

In a series of emails, spokeswoman Cori Mills confirmed Clarkson had a heart attack and also wrote Clarkson is in good spirits and that he expects to return home to Anchorage next week.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy nominated Clarkson to serve as attorney general on Dec. 5, 2018. On April 17, the Legislature confirmed Clarkson to his appointment during a joint hearing.

Clarkson has been among a group from the Departments of Law, Public Safety and Corrections working to advance Dunleavy’s package of four crime bills introduced in early January.

Mills said Clarkson remains strong enough to continue serving, adding, “There are standing delegations in place for any potential situation.”
