APD: Don't fall for phone scammers seeking gift cards
Anchorage police are warning residents about a phone scam in which callers try to extract prepaid gift cards from victims.
According to APD, multiple people have reported being called by someone pretending to be from a government agency, claiming they owe money or have a warrant then demanding payment. Police say the scammers are pretending to be from agencies including the IRS, Social Security and a warrants office.
Police say legitimate government offices won't ask for payment over the phone or through gift cards. They suggest hanging up if you get a phone call like this.
You can report a suspected phone scam on the Federal Trade Commission's website.
