KTVA has received two regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). The prestigious awards highlight outstanding achievements in journalism by news organizations.

Liz Raines’ “Resume Check: Who’s Running for Public Office?" was honored for Investigative Reporting. The piece focused on the claims made by candidates running for office and the inconsistencies found when those claims were investigated.

“It’s such an honor to receive an award of this caliber,” said Raines. “Edward R. Murrow demonstrated that fearless journalism could lead to positive change. He’s an inspiration for all of us to be brave in the face of adversity, and bold in our pursuit of public information. These stories represent a commitment to research the qualifications that candidates for public office list on their resumes — to trust, but verify their credentials, and research their backgrounds.”

The News Series award went to Daniella Rivera’s multi-part piece on ‘"Rogue Movers." The series highlighted the frustrations and struggles of victims of an unscrupulous moving company, and their effort to reclaim their belongings months later, ending in the generosity of an unaffiliated moving company completing the job.

“This series was much more than a case of unknowing victims being wronged by bad actors,” said Rivera. “Our investigation spread awareness about ‘Rogue Movers,’ but more importantly, it gave all of us an opportunity to witness a powerful example of community and the spirit of Alaskans. I’m so honored to have been a part of telling their story, and incredibly grateful for this award.”

“I couldn’t be prouder of my team,” said Janis Harper, KTVA News Director. “As journalists, we are here to inform the public and hold accountable those in positions of power. Both of these pieces serve that goal admirably, and speak to the quality reporting in our organization.”

Both regional award recipients move on to national competition in Small Market Television. Those award winners will be announced in June.
