Medevac service LifeMed Alaska will operate on the Aleutian chain year-round by keeping its Dutch Harbor Base open. The company made the announcement in a news release Thursday.

This is a change from previous years when LifeMed only operated the base during commercial fishing seasons and openings.

LifeMed CEO Russell Edwards says the change is great news for residents of the area.

"Given the fact that Dutch Harbor is farther from Anchorage than Chicago is from New York City, decreasing response times during medical emergencies is crucial for patients throughout the Aleutians and surrounding areas," Russell wrote in the release.

In addition to offering year-round medevac services, LifeMed will also assist local medical staff in stabilizing critical patients.
