Kids struck by alleged drunken driver in Eagle River return home
The two children struck and wounded by an alleged drunk driver in Eagle River last month are now back home and recuperating with their families.
Hank Martiny, 10, has returned from the hospital ahead of schedule according to his family. He started eating solid foods sooner than expected and went home last week.
Hank and his older sister, Maddy, are now both adjusting to their new normal. Police say the kids were riding their bikes on an Old Glenn Highway sidewalk on March 24 when 60-year-old Vicie Zielinski’s Subaru SUV veered onto the sidewalk and hit them.
Charging documents against Zielinski document her blood alcohol content as 0.189, more than twice Alaska’s legal limit for driving of 0.08.
The kids' loved ones say their bike helmets helped save their lives. Hank and Maddy’s first round of follow-up doctor appointments started Monday.
