The Department of Health and Social Services said Thursday Margaret Brodie no longer heads the Division of Health Care Services.

DHSS spokesperson Clinton Bennett confirmed the departure, but declined to say whether Brodie resigned or was fired, citing a policy against discussing specific personnel issues.

The department has named Renee Gayhart as interim director for the Division of Health Care Services.

Earlier this week the state’s top public defender, Quinlan Steiner, announced that he was resigning. His resignation letter did not state a reason, but came soon after he told state Rep. Matt Claman, D-Anchorage, that his travel request to testify on a state crime bill was denied by Tuckerman Babcock, Gov. Mike Dunleavy's chief of staff.

Steiner said he would wait until the Alaska Judicial Council finds a replacement before leaving his post.
