Part of a Midtown street near Providence Alaska Medical Center and the University of Alaska Anchorage will be closed overnight Thursday by a sinkhole, according to local road crews.

A Municipality of Anchorage traffic advisory, posted at about 3:30 p.m., warned of “emergency sinkhole repairs” in Providence Drive’s eastbound lanes just east of Spirit Way.

Charles Boyle, with the municipality's Department of Project Management and Engineering, said there weren't any reports of vehicles having hit the sinkhole Thursday.

"There’s a culvert going under Chester Creek there that needs to be repaired, and that’s what caused the sinkhole," Chester said.

Road crews at the scene had filled in the sinkhole, which they said occurred at a location that has frequently seen sinkhole problems, and placed traffic cones near it.

Workers were planning to close Providence Drive in the vicinity of Piper Street and UAA Drive at 6 p.m., then lay down steel plates during repairs and reopen it Friday morning.
