Alaska has a new champion speller.

Camden Armstrong, an eighth-grader at Anchorage's Romig Middle School, will be headed to the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Camden won in the 13th round with the word "eucrasia," which means a normal state of health.

His lexicon beat out runner-up Garrett Briscoe, an eighth-grader from Homer Middle School, after the two went back and forth for a couple rounds.

There were 190 spellers from public, private, home and charter schools that got on stage at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts Tuesday. Organizers say more schools entered their students than in 2019 than in previous years.

The students in grades three through eight came from as far away as Nome, the Aleutians and Southeast to compete.

The 92nd Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee is in Maryland at the end of May.
