GCI customers in Anchorage, Eagle River and Wasilla who lost phone, cable and internet service Friday should once more be online, after an hours-long outage linked to a damaged fiber-optic cable.

According to a message shortly after 5:15 p.m. from GCI spokesman Josh Edge, teams "have finished repairs and services have been restored."

"We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as our technicians worked diligently to get it resolved," Edge wrote.

Anchorage police had said Friday afternoon that the outage “may impact ability to call 911” in the affected areas.

Earlier Friday, Edge said the outage was linked to an Anchorage vehicle fire last weekend that had damaged a fiber-optic cable.

“The issue was first reported just before 6:45 a.m. today,” Edge wrote. “The issue appears to be with the same section of fiber that was replaced this past weekend.”

Edge asked anyone still experiencing service issues Friday to call GCI at 800-800-4800.
