The 2019 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins with the Ceremonial Start March 2 in downtown Anchorage.

Mushers will take the traditional Southern Route this year. The race course, normally used on odd years, was also used in 2018. The course veers south at Ophir and takes mushers through the historic mushing village of Iditarod. It then heads west to Anvik before heading up the Yukon River to Kaltag where it meets the traditional route to Unalakleet, up around the Norton Sound to Koyuk and eventually west to Front Street in Nome.

Snowfall this year, as opposed to recent years, has been adequate to support the race, according to officials.
