An annual concert from the University of Alaska Anchorage is a night of music that all can enjoy, no matter their taste. From jazz to classical, opera to musical theater, the Department of Music's Symphony of Sounds is sure to please!

UAA music performance major Adriana Latonio says now in its 23rd year, the Symphony of Sounds is a unique concert experience.

“It is [a collaboration of] all of UAA’s music departments, the large ensembles and small ensembles coming together as one," Latonio explained. "It is a fundraiser for the UAA Music Department and it is another opportunity for all of the students to share their craft and showcase all of the hard work we put in every day.”

Armin Abdihodzic, an associate professor of music at UAA, says this is the university's marquee concert experience of the year. Preparation starts at the beginning of the fall semester, as students work hard to earn their spot in the eclectic showcase.

“[Symphony of Sounds is] done in two halves and the music doesn’t stop," said Abdihodzic. "When one ensemble or performer is done, the lights shift to the next group. So we get two halves of continuous music. It’s a unique experience because you get to experience everything from early music, to opera, to jazz, to wind ensemble, to solo guitar, solo voice, all kinds of repertoire.”

While the show is full of wonderful music and talented artists, it also benefits an important cause.

“All the ticket sales, all the proceeds from the silent auction, go toward our Excellence in Music fund," Abdihodzic said. "We award, every year, scholarships for our students. There’s a scholarship committee that looks at all the students, looks at their [grade point averages], achievements... and rewards students that deserve it. It’s a great opportunity to help support music and art."

The 23rd annual Symphony of Sounds takes place on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. Tickets range in price from $24.99 to $29.99 and can be purchased at
