ASD, UAA, APU cancel classes Friday due to icy roads
All Anchorage School District schools will be closed due to "icy road conditions" on Friday, Jan. 25, according to ASD officials.
A later release from the University of Alaska Anchorage stated all classes for the day are canceled. Both the Anchorage and Chugiak-Eagle River campuses are closed, according to UAA spokesperson Kirstin Olmstead.
Alaska Pacific University has also decided to cancel classes, citing safety concerns over weather. The closure is for all on-campus classes; students enrolled in online courses should check with their professors.
ASD alerted the community just after 5 a.m., saying roads were deemed unsafe for travel. According to ASD's website, officials consult several sources when making the determination to close schools, with the superintendent making the final decision.
A news release later Friday morning announced that ASD middle school and high school activities were cancelled, with some exceptions. The following events, along with any bus transportation associated with them, are still happening as scheduled Friday:
- The West High Alaska Airlines Classic basketball tournament
- The South Anchorage High School Drama, Debate, and Forensics tournament
- The hockey game between South High and Dimond High at Ben Boeke Arena
Saturday's activities should continue as normal.
Camp Fire Alaska announced it will open emergency closure sites at multiple locations in Anchorage beginning at 7:30 a.m. Friday. Parents can visit Camp Fire Alaska's website for more information and to determine their site.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Anchorage until 9 a.m. for freezing rain. Light rain showers will continue during the morning commute, which is freezing on roads across town. Temperatures are slowly climb to the low 40s where they will stay through the afternoon. In addition to the icy roads, be prepared for strong winds out of the southeast of 20 to 30 mph in town and up to 75 mph for Upper Hillside and Turnagain Arm.
