Outfitting store REI will be making its move from Spenard to Midtown next week, after months of construction renovating a former Carrs Safeway grocery store.

The story of the move has gradually emerged over the past year, with REI filing permits for the move to its new 48,000-square-foot location.

The co-op announced Tuesday that its longtime store at the Northern Lights Center will close for the last time at 6 p.m. Sunday. Its new location, also on Northern Lights Boulevard about a mile east at the Midtown Mall, will open at 10 a.m. Jan. 18. The mall is also receiving a new Carrs Safeway at another space within the building, as well a Guitar Center location.

The new store’s formal opening will be marked by a party from March 22 through March 24.
