Palmer's plastic bag ban, approved last year by local authorities, is now in effect.

The town's two big grocery stores, Carrs Safeway and Fred Meyer, both had paper bags on hand for customers Tuesday.

In May, the Palmer City Council voted to end the use of disposable plastic bags less than four-thousandths of an inch thick, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Wasilla passed a similar bag ban last year as well.

Advocates say the thin plastic often gets blown from the landfill and ends up polluting the environment.

Anchorage has also passed a ban – but Assembly members are trying to push back its effective date to later this fall.
