A man accused of driving drunk and crashing his SUV containing a gun and his young son is facing several charges in the case, Anchorage police said.

Kyle Thomas, 28, was charged with OUI, endangering the welfare of a child, weapons misconduct and refusal to submit to a chemical test in the Thursday crash, police said in a Friday statement.

APD dispatchers received calls at about 7:45 p.m. Thursday reporting a vehicle in a ditch near Dimond Boulevard and the Seward Highway. Responding officers found Thomas’ 2014 Toyota RAV4 between Brayton Drive and the highway, where a good Samaritan had stopped and was using a shovel to help dig it out of the snow.

“Officers located the driver inside the vehicle along with his 2-year-old son,” police wrote. “They weren’t injured. Officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from [Thomas] and his speech was slurred. [He] became uncooperative and refused to provide a breath sample.”

Thomas was arrested and held at the Anchorage Jail. Officers found a handgun inside the vehicle, taking custody of Thomas’ son until the boy was released to relatives.
