Gov. Mike Dunleavy appointed Col. Torrence Saxe as the new Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Commissioner on Dec. 21, according to an official release.

Saxe most recently served as the commander of the Alaska Air National Guard, a duty he took in June 2018.

In the release, Dunleavy stated, "Colonel Saxe has an impeccable record of service to our country and I chose him with the knowledge that he will demonstrate that same level of commitment, sacrifice and courage for the people of Alaska.”

As the commissioner of the department, Saxe is also the adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard. He is in command of more than 4,400 personnel in various military divisions around the state. He is also making sure state employees and guard members are ready for any state or federal missions.
