'Tis the season for Santa Claus and, of course, his reindeer.

On Thursday, some lucky kindergartners from Inlet View Elementary got to meet both.

Star the reindeer and his handler made a special appearance on the Park Strip. They were joined by none other than Jolly Old Saint Nick himself.

The kids got a chance to see the reindeer up close and Santa got a chance to see if Star might be fit to pull a sled.

Star's handler, Albert Whitehead, said Star is a back-up in case something happened to a member of Santa's regular team.

"He's a reserve reindeer, so Santa wants to know if he's healthy," Whitehead said. "He's passed the test, he's available!"

Star was born on the reindeer farm in the Butte 18 months ago. Whitehead said this is the first time the deer will be celebrating the holidays in Anchorage.
