Teachers in the Anchorage School District voted to accept a new contract with the district, a representative for the teachers union said.

Tom Klaameyer, president of the Anchorage Education Association, said members of the group approved the deal after months of negotiations with ASD.

In November, the two sides brought mediators in to help with the process, reaching a compromise and narrowly avoiding arbitration.

The AEA vote must be certified at the next association meeting, then the contract will go before the ASD School Board. The next school board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 17.

At a school board meeting Monday night, Klaameyer said the AEA's reaction to the new contract is positive.

"It moves us forward on a lot of the working condition issues that we're working on with the district. It moves us a step forward and gives us the stability we've been looking for the next couple of years," he said.

The new three-year contract will end in June 2021.
