Eagle River pedestrian tunnel damaged by water main break
Damage from a water main break prompted officials to close a pedestrian tunnel in Eagle River on Sunday.
Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility posted a picture of the tunnel, destroyed, on their Facebook page.
The tunnel, north of the Briggs Bridge over Eagle River, was significantly damaged after an 8-inch water main failed under it, according to the AWWU post. They said the broken section was isolated and not affecting customers.
Municipal manager Bill Falsey said in a news conference Sunday evening that the Briggs Bridge, which also closed due to the break, could be shut down for at least a week.
The repairs could be delayed due to a possible second break on the same pipeline.
"AWWU is working closely and coordinating with the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to complete this repair and restore traffic flow across Briggs Bridge," the post read.
