More than 5 million passengers fly through Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport each year, but now the airport is reporting increased passenger traffic for 2018.

Nearly 50,000 more people traveled through ANC in the third quarter of 2018 than during the same period last year — a more than five percent increase. In the month since the third quarter ended, the airport saw an extra 6,000 passengers than the year before.

Airport Manager Jim Szczesniak said that since traffic was down in 2016 and flat in 2017, the airport had to adjust the way it approached growing services.

"We implemented a new strategy partnering with the tourism industry to better explain the Anchorage market to the airlines and that has really paid off," Szczesniak said.

One carrier that seems to have responded to the effort is United Airlines. It will start daily service from Anchorage to New York's JFK airport next June.

"Daily New York service was a strategic goal for the airport so we're very excited we can provide daily access to this market," Szczesniak said.
